Red Sea, Indian Ocean & Gulf: who to call at sea

Last verified:

On the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia’s Border Guard tells boaters to call 994 in the north and south of its coast and 911 off Jeddah and Yanbu. In Egypt — Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam — and in Aqaba no navy publishes a public line: you call the police emergency number (122 in Egypt, 911 in Jordan) and ask for sea rescue.

From the Maldives to the Gulf, sea rescue is run by coast guards and navies, and each publishes its own line: 191 for the Maldives coast guard, the Seychelles coast guard’s emergency number, the Sri Lanka Navy’s operations room. In the UAE the authorities give 999 (in Abu Dhabi also 996, the coast guard), in Oman the police number 9999.

Réunion and Mayotte are French: 196 reaches the regional rescue centre (CROSS Sud Océan Indien), and 112 works too.
