Vava'u: boating safety
Last verified:
Vava'u, in northern Tonga, is the country's main sailing and charter area: a cluster of hilly islands around the sheltered harbour of Neiafu (Port of Refuge), with many anchorages a short hop apart. It is a regular stop for South Pacific cruising yachts and, from June to November, a humpback whale area.

Local rules
Humpback whales visit Tongan waters from June to November and whale watching is strictly regulated: it is illegal to swim or kayak with whales unless you are on a licensed boat with a certified guide. Penalties reach 5,000 pa'anga or 18 months in prison, even for a first offence.

Tides can produce powerful currents in lagoons and many waves break straight onto reefs. Loose rocks and debris from the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption may still be in the sea and on beaches.

Safety on older local vessels is a concern: ferries often do not follow normal safety rules and are often overloaded.

Hospital and medical
Health facilities in Tonga are basic and most non-basic medical problems need evacuation abroad, so carry insurance that covers it. There is no hyperbaric (recompression) chamber in Tonga.
