Mariehamn is the capital of Åland, a self-governing Finnish island region between Sweden and mainland Finland. The town has two guest harbours, one on each side of the town, and large passenger ferries call at the western harbour. Åland is a common stop on passages between Stockholm and the Finnish archipelago.

Mariehamn has two guest harbours: ÅSS in the western harbour (+358 18 13610) and MSF in the eastern harbour, Åland's largest guest harbour with about 300 berths (harbour office +358 18 19979).

Åland has bird protection areas, including Råttgrundet (Mariehamn and Jomala). In them landing is prohibited from 15 March to 31 July and motorboats may not exceed 7 knots.
