Florianópolis: boating safety
Last verified:
Florianópolis, on Santa Catarina Island in southern Brazil, is a sailing and boating centre with marinas and yacht clubs on its sheltered North and South Bays. Boats cruise the island's beaches and the Arvoredo marine reserve to the north, and in winter whale-watching season the right-whale coast to the south.

Hazards
The southern entrance to the island's bays is difficult. The bar between Ponta dos Naufragados and Araçatuba Island is only 250 m wide, with southeasterly currents, and the South Bay averages just 2.2 m deep with several silted areas.

The northern entrance is navigable in suitable conditions as far as the Hercílio Luz bridge in central Florianópolis. Three isolated-danger marks lie inside the North Bay.
