Overview
The Koninklijke Liberty Yacht Club was founded in 1934 by twelve kayakers as the Arbeiders Vereniging voor Watertoerisme on Antwerp’s left bank and in 1945 took the name Liberty Yacht Club, a nod to regained freedom and the Liberty ships in the port. The Royal title came with its fiftieth anniversary in 1984. The club has a clubhouse on the Scheldt at Linkeroever with boat storage and a self-propelled boat hoist (the Mammoet, up to 16 t), and a sailing school on the Galgenweel lake with storage for 200 boats. Members race OK Dinghies, Finns, Snipes and J/24s; the club runs events such as the Marlin Spike Cup for Snipes and teaches the Belgian skipper’s and yachtmaster courses.
