For visiting boats
Horta Marina lies on the SE coast of Faial, 50 m from the town centre, sheltered from every wind inside the harbour behind a lit breakwater. It is the near-obligatory stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic from the Caribbean to Europe and the finish of races such as Les Sables–Les Açores–Les Sables, ARC Europe, La Route des Hortensias and Ceuta–Horta; crews paint the mole walls for luck on their passage. It has 240 berths, 4.0 m draught at the entrance and a 25 t travel lift; call on VHF 10 (watch on 16). Enter on the leading line of Boa Viagem over Carmo church at 285°, keeping clear of the mole in case the Pico ferry is coming out; tidal streams in the Faial channel are strong, the flood running north. Blue Flag since 1987.
