Overview
The Associação Naval de Lisboa was founded in 1856 as the Real Associação Naval and is the oldest yacht club in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. From the start it promoted sailing and racing on the Tagus: it wrote the country's first racing rules, ran Portugal's first ocean race (Porto–Cascais, 1898) and the first amateur skipper courses (1900). The sailing section is at Doca de Belém, with a sailing school, 420 race teams, ANC-rated cruisers and adapted sailing in Hansa 303s; the rowing and canoeing section, founded in 1893, is at Doca de Santo Amaro and was the first in Portugal to take up canoeing, in 1929.
