Overview

The Koninklijke Studenten Roeivereeniging Njord in Leiden was founded in 1874 and calls itself the oldest and only Royal student rowing club in the Netherlands; at its start the club received two boats on permanent loan from the royal family. Its name began the tradition of Norse god names for student rowing clubs (Laga, Aegir, Skadi, Vidar, Skøll). The clubhouse on the Galgewater, with a brick boathouse from 1914 and the society rooms from 1926, was renovated in 2006 and extended after 2016 for thirteen more boats as membership doubled to almost a thousand. Njord races the Varsity, the Hollandia and international regattas such as Henley and Bled, and also offers junior and corporate rowing.
