Overview
The Koninklijke Marine Jacht Club was founded in Den Helder on 29 April 1899 by naval officers to promote seamanship among young officers: commanding a seagoing yacht was seen as the best preparation for a naval career. It received the Royal title in 1901. Membership is in principle open to serving and former officers of the armed forces; the club has about 500 members. Club yachts once raced the Fastnet, Hook of Holland–Harwich and the North Sea Regatta; today members are mostly cruising sailors. The KMJC has its own marina and clubhouse on Harssens Schiereiland.
