Overview
Compagnia della Vela was founded in Venice on 21 March 1911 as the Yacht Club Veneziano and has two bases: the historic clubhouse in the neoclassical pavilion of the Giardini Reali, a step from Piazza San Marco, and the sailing base on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore with the members' basins. In 1992 it won the Louis Vuitton Cup with Il Moro di Venezia and challenged for the America's Cup in San Diego. Its FIV sailing school runs all year at San Giorgio, with Optimist and ILCA squads racing in the lagoon and beyond. The basins are reached through the Lido inlet, entering from the west; when members' boats are away there are visitor berths.
