Overview
Founded on 12 June 1880, the Union Nautique de Lyon — renamed Aviron Union Nautique de Lyon in 1976 — rows on the Saône from its 1896 boathouse on the Quai Clemenceau at Caluire-et-Cuire. The leading club of the Lyon area, it was winning national titles from the 1890s and became French club champion in 1992. Since 1925 it has run the Circuit des Îles, one of the oldest head races on the calendar, and since 1999 the Traversée de Lyon, a 30-km row under the city's bridges that brings up to 400 rowers together every 1 May. The club offers racing, adult recreational rowing, university rowing and summer courses.
