Overview
The Real Club Marítimo del Abra – Real Sporting Club was formed in 1972 by merging the two yacht clubs of the Abra, the bay at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary: the Real Sporting Club, founded in 1898, and the Real Club Marítimo del Abra, founded in 1902. Its base is at Las Arenas (Getxo) on the Abra, with a marina of about 300 berths with water and electricity. Since the late 19th century its members pioneered recreational sailing and yacht racing on the Cantabrian coast, and the club runs keelboat and dinghy regattas. Its sailing school takes more than 1,500 pupils a year, including summer dinghy courses for children.
