Overview
Segel-Verein Altona-Oevelgönne (SVAOe) was founded on 5 April 1905 by eleven young sailors on the Oevelgönne bank of the Elbe and is one of Hamburg's largest sailing clubs: at the start of 2026 it had 757 members and 542 registered boats. The clubhouse stands at Hamburg-Neumühlen on the Elbe; members sail from berths in the Hamburger Yachthafen at Wedel, the Mühlenberg dinghy harbour, the Outer Alster and the club's Baltic base in Eckernförde. For training children, juniors and adults the club has 32 Optimists, five 420s, a Pirate and two youth cutters; in winter there are licence courses and the winter academy. SVAOe runs regattas on the Alster, the Elbe, the North Sea and the Baltic.
