The kayak safety app for paddlers who go alone.

SHORT ANSWER

The real risk in a kayak or canoe isn’t distance. It’s a capsize in cold water, with minutes to solve it. VesselSOS gives you a float plan someone actually watches: a live link for the person ashore, and an SOS screen with your position, a script of what to say and a one-tap 911 call.

Cold water doesn’t negotiate

A crossing that’s routine in August is a survival problem in May, on the Great Lakes, in Maine or on any northern lake. If you go over and can’t get back in, the clock is short, and the person who raises the alarm will be the one ashore. With a live link they see your dot stop in open water and know it’s time, instead of finding out at dusk that you never came back.

The float plan that updates itself

A paper float plan fails the moment plans change. The live link shows your actual position, speed and battery in any browser, with no app for the watcher. Set a return time too: if you’re late, the app asks you whether you’re OK. It doesn’t alert anyone else yet, so still leave a float plan with someone. Apps that do send overdue alerts are in our float plan apps comparison.

Kayak safety gear and requirements

Federal rules ask every kayak and canoe for a USCG-approved life jacket per person (no throwable needed) and a whistle or other sound signal, plus a white light ready to show between sunset and sunrise (33 CFR 175, 33 CFR 83, checked Oct 2026). Your state may add more, such as a wear rule for kids or a cold-water season, and laws change, so confirm with your state boating agency. See life jacket laws by state and build the full list in the safety checklist.

When you can’t hold a radio

From a swamped cockpit you won’t operate a VHF you don’t carry. The SOS screen opens on your coordinates, spelled out so you can read them to a 911 dispatcher, with a prompt to name the lake, river or bay. The pre-written text to your people (one tap to open, then Send) gets through on coverage too weak for data. GPS itself needs no signal at all.

HONESTY CLAUSE

Skills come first: a life jacket you actually wear, a re-entry you’ve practiced, and good judgment about the forecast. VesselSOS is an aid, not a rescue service: in immediate danger, call 911, or use Channel 16 if you carry a VHF.

Frequently asked

I paddle where coverage is patchy. What still works?+

Your position, the Mayday text and your boat details work fully offline. Calls and texts need a cell signal; a text often gets through where data has already dropped. Positions recorded without signal are sent when coverage returns.

Does it make sense for a group trip?+

Yes. Each paddler shares their own link, and the shore contact sees the whole group side by side in browser tabs.

How much battery does a day trip use?+

Tracking runs only during a trip. At the default 30-second interval we estimate about 4% battery an hour; choose 1 or 5 minutes for long days, and below 20% it drops to every 5 minutes on its own. The watcher sees your battery level.
