Leaving a sail plan in Malta: what exists, and what doesn’t

SHORT ANSWER

Malta has no official trip-report or sail-plan service for leisure boats: nobody receives your plan or comes looking if you’re late. Transport Malta does require you to plan your passage, and VTS reporting is about traffic, not overdue boats. So the safety net is someone ashore who knows your plan. VesselSOS gives that person a live link, and texts them automatically if you don’t answer its “Are you OK?” after your return time.

What exists in Malta

Transport Malta requires mariners to plan their voyage or passage in full, from departure to destination, and to keep up-to-date charts (a chart-plotter or phone app counts). Nobody receives or monitors that plan. Reporting to Valletta VTS, Marsaxlokk VTS, Mġarr LPS and Malta VTS (run by the Armed Forces of Malta) is mandatory for vessels in territorial waters, but it’s traffic reporting, not an overdue alert. Schemes like the UK’s former RYA SafeTrx or New Zealand’s Coastguard trip reports have no Maltese equivalent.

The job a sail plan does, and how to cover it

THE JOBWHAT TO DO IN MALTAIN VESSELSOS
Your boat on record Registration with Transport Malta (small ships), or your foreign registration Craft profile (name, type, length, colour, MMSI, call sign) in your account, read out in the call script and the MAYDAY form
Plan + overdue alert Make your passage plan and leave it with someone ashore; if you’re late, they call 112 Live tracking link with your battery and course, plus a return time. If you’re late, the phone asks “Are you OK?”; if you don’t answer, your contacts get an automatic text with the live link (it never alerts a rescue service)
Track recording Chart apps record tracks, but don’t share them for safety A browser link: the person ashore installs nothing; your trips stay in your history for 12 months
Call for help VHF 16 and DSC, a PLB or EPIRB, 112: unchanged Position, word-for-word MAYDAY and a one-tap 112 call on one screen
Friends following you No official scheme; some logbook apps let friends follow a live broadcast Pro: friends you accept see your live position during a trip (if you turn it on) and get a notification when you set off and come back. They get no overdue SMS: that goes to your Emergency and Live contacts
Marking hazards for others Not found in the other safety apps we checked (as of 10 Oct 2026) A shared hazard map anyone can view; with Pro you report and confirm hazards. Reports come from users, aren’t checked and don’t go to RCC Malta
HONESTY CLAUSE

VesselSOS isn’t connected to the AFM, RCC Malta or Transport Malta, and it doesn’t file a plan with anyone. It gives the people you choose a live view of where you are, and the app puts a 112 call and your position on one screen. In a life-threatening emergency, call 112 or use VHF channel 16.

Frequently asked

Is there an official sail-plan service in Malta?+

Not one we could find. Transport Malta requires a passage plan, but nobody receives or monitors it. Leave your plan and return time with someone ashore.

Do I have to report to VTS?+

Transport Malta says participation with Valletta VTS, Marsaxlokk VTS, Malta VTS and Mġarr LPS is mandatory for all vessels, recreational craft included, and that vessels in territorial waters keep a listening watch on the allocated VHF channel. That’s traffic reporting, not an overdue alert.

What happened to SafeTrx?+

RYA SafeTrx was a UK service and closed on 31 December 2025. It never covered Maltese waters.

When is VesselSOS available?+

It’s in beta on iPhone (TestFlight) now, with Android later. The SOS screen is free; tracking and the return-time check are part of Pro (2.99 € a month or 19.99 € a year, with a 14-day free trial). See the plans.
