Overview
Sausalito Yacht Club was founded on New Year's Eve 1942 by seven teenage sailors, the oldest sixteen, who looked after local boats while their owners were away at war; for years no one older than the oldest founder could join. After meeting aboard a steam schooner and in rented clubhouses, members drove the piles for their own clubhouse on the old ferry railhead in December 1958, and it was dedicated in 1960, right next to today's Sausalito ferry landing. The club runs racing, sail training, youth and high-school sailing, cruise-ins and kayak and SUP use. Its dock is for members and reciprocal-club boats for tie-ups of up to two hours (no overnight), and sees strong surge and current.
