Overview

The Outrigger Canoe Club was founded on Waikiki Beach in May 1908 to save the old Hawaiian water sports of surfing and outrigger canoe paddling, at a time when hotels and mansions were closing off the shore. Its first clubhouse was two grass houses on leased beachfront land; after the lease expired the club moved in 1963–64 to its present clubhouse near Diamond Head on Kalakaua Avenue. With more than 4,000 members it remains devoted to Hawaiian ocean sports — canoe paddling regattas, paddleboard and distance races — and is credited with inventing beach volleyball. Members of reciprocal clubs can visit with a letter of introduction.
