Overview
Lough Derg Yacht Club was formed in 1835, which makes it one of the oldest sailing clubs in Ireland, and it has shared its clubhouse at Dromineer, near Nenagh, with a local fishing club since the 1920s. The present clubhouse was rebuilt around 2000, partly by the members themselves, and the grounds have room for dinghy parking, boat storage, tents and caravans – at one championship 120 dinghies were launched in half an hour. Sailing on a sheltered freshwater lake stretches the season into spring and autumn; the August LDYC Regatta, with racing after afternoon tea, is the highlight, and the club is a home of the classic wooden Shannon One Design. Juniors learn in July courses and local schools sail with the club from April to October.
