Overview

Foynes Yacht Club was founded on 30 July 1962 by seven boat owners in Foynes, Co. Limerick, on the south shore of the Shannon Estuary. Members built a 250-foot slipway on Cooleen Point over a weekend in 1971, opened the clubhouse in 1973 and laid the first pontoons in 1983, replaced by volunteers in 2017–18; the yard has boat storage and a shed. The club races cruisers and J/24s on the estuary – it runs a May Series and a September Series and revived the Foynes Regatta – and its Sailing Academy, accredited by Irish Sailing in 2006, was ISA Sailing School of the Year in 2016.
