Overview

The Royal Temple Yacht Club was founded in 1857 by yachtsmen sailing from Temple Steps on the Thames in London and moved its sailing to the Kent coast as river traffic grew, opening its clubhouse overlooking Ramsgate's Royal Harbour in 1896; it became 'Royal' in 1897 and its members' yachts have flown the blue ensign under an Admiralty warrant since 1898. The club launched Ramsgate Week in 1898 and still organises it every July, with racing off Ramsgate and a shoreside programme; it also runs RYA shore-based navigation courses, youth sailing aboard racing yachts and a seven-bedroom clubhouse hotel.
