Overview
Leander Club, founded on the Tideway in 1818, has been based at Henley-on-Thames since the late 1890s, its clubhouse backing onto the Thames seconds from the finish of the Henley Royal Regatta course. Rather than a grassroots club, it is a high-performance centre that coaches rowers to challenge for places in the GB Rowing squads; its athletes have won 159 Olympic and Paralympic medals since 1908, 62 of them gold. The club runs a fleet of Empacher boats from singles to eights, its own gyms, and is also a private members' club with a busy hospitality programme that helps fund the rowing.
