Overview
The Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron was founded on 1 November 1869 as the South Australian Yacht Club, gained its 'Royal' title in 1890 and moved from Birkenhead on the Port River to its present home at Outer Harbor in 1926, about 30 minutes from the Adelaide CBD. Keelboats race in two divisions through summer and in a winter series, joined by boats from neighbouring clubs, and the offshore series is a training ground for crews heading to the Sydney Hobart or Melbourne to Hobart. There is a non-spinnaker twilight series in the Port River during daylight saving, a women's keelboat series, and a strong cruising tradition with club moorings around Gulf St Vincent. Juniors aged 4–17 learn in Optimists, Pacers and the club's J/24s in the sheltered Outer Harbor basin.
