The boat tracking app built around the people at home.

SHORT ANSWER

Looking for a boat tracking app in Australia? If you want to see ships and ferries, that’s an AIS app. If you want the people at home to see your own boat, that’s a live link, and that’s what VesselSOS does. They follow your position, speed, course and battery in an ordinary browser, with no app and no account. Tracking runs only during a trip you start, and the same data fills in the SOS screen if the day turns. It’s a TestFlight beta on iPhone now, and Plus, which includes the link, is free during the beta.

How the live link works

01
Start tracking

Tap Going to sea, pick who sees you and set a return time. Tracking stops when you tap I'm ashore. Nothing runs before or after.

02
Share the link

Your Live contacts get it by SMS: one tap opens the message, then you hit Send. It opens in a browser, so the person at home installs nothing and signs up for nothing.

03
They watch you move

Position, speed, course and your phone's battery level, live on a map. You choose how often it updates, from every 5 seconds to every 5 minutes.

A log-on and a live link do different jobs

Logging on with Marine Rescue tells trained volunteers where you’re going and when you’ll be back, and they come looking if you don’t log off. Keep doing it (how logging on works, state by state). What a log-on doesn’t give your family is a view of where you actually are right now. A live link does: if the wind gets up and you tuck in behind an island, they see that, not just the plan you left. If you’re past your return time, the app asks you, on your own phone, whether you’re OK. It doesn’t alert anyone else yet. And if the dot stops somewhere it shouldn’t, what to say on the radio is one page away.

How it compares

TRACKERHOW IT WORKSTHE CATCH
AIS apps and transponders An AIS transponder broadcasts your position to other boats and public ship-tracking sites; the “flight radar for boats” apps show those signals You need the hardware to show up at all, and most tinnies don’t carry it. Great for spotting ships, not for family watching your boat
Chart-app track Records your route on your own phone Usually stays on your phone: more logbook than a way to be seen
Marine Rescue NSW app tracking Optional safety tracking while you’re logged on, recorded for Marine Rescue NSW Updates every 30 minutes (iOS listing) and goes to Marine Rescue, not to your family
VesselSOS link Live position, speed, course and battery in a browser link for the people you choose Needs your phone and mobile coverage; positions logged without signal are sent when it returns. Offshore, carry an EPIRB or PLB regardless

Battery and privacy

Outside a trip the app doesn’t track you at all. During a trip it reports in the background, every 30 seconds by default (roughly 4% battery an hour by our estimate), and below 20% battery it slows to every 5 minutes on its own. The people watching see your battery level, so a flat phone never reads as a drifting boat. Trip history is kept for 12 months, then deleted automatically. And this website sets no tracking cookies unless you allow them.

HONESTY CLAUSE

A tracking link is not a distress system. It tells your people where you are; it doesn’t alert anyone. In a life-threatening emergency, make a Mayday on VHF channel 16 if you have a radio, and call Triple Zero (000). The app’s SOS screen makes that call fast, and offshore you should still carry an EPIRB or PLB.

Frequently asked

Does the person at home need the app?+

No. The link opens in any browser, on any device, with no account. That’s the point: the least techy person in your life can watch you.

Is this like a flight radar for boats?+

No. Those apps show other vessels’ AIS signals. VesselSOS shares your own position, from your phone, with the people you choose, with no AIS hardware on your boat.

Does it work on a tinny, kayak or jet ski?+

Yes. Set your boat type in the profile: sailing boat, motor boat, SUP/kayak or jet ski. Its name, type and colour go into the call script, and its name into the texts you send.

What happens if I lose mobile coverage?+

The link shows your last known position and that the signal is lost. Positions recorded without signal are queued and sent when coverage returns. Your phone keeps its GPS fix fully offline, so the SOS screen still has your position and Mayday text.
